Hi all. I was sent a mooncup (known in the USA as MCUK) to try. Mooncup is the original silicone menstrual cup designed by women to be a convenient, safe and eco-friendly alternative to regular tampons and sanitary pads. Made in the UK by a multi-award winning ethical business, the Mooncup menstrual cup offers an end to the waste, discomfort and expense of disposable sanitary protection.
Here’s a great video
I have to be honest (as usual) in saying I was more than sceptical! You want me to use what??? up where? all day? then yes I repeat EMPTY yes empty my blood down the toilet in front of a potential toilet queue audience! Sounds like a torture scene from “I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!”. Well I’m passionate as I’m sure you know about eco living and helping the environment when I can. So I had to be fair and give it a fair trial.
First thing you have to select your size.
Because vaginal and pelvic floor tones naturally reduce with age, the size ‘A’ is recommended for women aged 30 or over. The difference between the ‘A’ and the ‘B’ is only small (3mm), but it is crucial!
Size ‘A’ is also recommended for all women who have given birth vaginally, regardless of age.
Designed for young girls and women under the age of 30 who have not given birth vaginally. It may also be suitable for women over the age of 30 who have had corrective surgery to the vagina, or who are advanced in tone-maintaining activities such as yoga, dance or pilates.
Some of the reasons to try Mooncup
- Made from soft medical grade silicone, the Mooncup is latex-free and contains no dyes, BPA, toxins or bleaches. It’s also great for women with sensitive skin.
- Tampons can cause dryness and leave fibres behind. The Mooncup is designed to respect your natural balance.
- On average, one woman will use over 11,000 tampons or pads in their lifetime, which will end up in landfill or in the sea.
- One woman uses up to 22 items of sanitary protection every period.
- Regardless of your flow, you only need one Mooncup, and it lasts for years and years, making it the most economical sanitary product you can buy.
First try. Day 1.
Period starts, open the mooncup box and read the instructions. Oh heck I haven’t cleaned the cup in preparation for first use (boil it immersed in water for 5-7 minutes).
Right ready to go. Chose your folding technique.
The Mooncup is designed to be worn as low as it will comfortably sit in the vagina; vaginal length varies from woman to woman.
Once inserted I have to say it feels weird. I walk cautiously about 5 steps……then promptly back to the bathroom. Jeez did I order the moonmug?? Hell it feels foreign! Quickly re reading the instructions I realise I havent trimmed the stem. A quick snip with the scissors and quick clean of the mooncup under the tap and I’m good to go again.
……..Ok feels …nothing…..fantastic I feel nothing it’s obviously there but less invasive than a tampon. It feels comfortable, I’m happy.
Several hours pass (wear for 4-8hrs) I must now remove the mooncup. A little more carefully than my first attempt I must add. With a little push on the side of the cup it comes out with ease. So ewwww my period right there for me to see. Actually it’s quite interesting to see how heavy my period is. I rinse under the tap and with its special medical grade silicon I needn’t worry about any infections as no nasties can grow on the mooncup. I re insert again and carry on my trial.
After using the mooncup for several periods I can honestly say I have less period pain. I have mastered putting it in and taking it out. Also with a little planning I have inflicted no horrendous blood scenarios on anybody!I
Mooncup have a great friendly website and free call number if you have any queries.
I now use the mooncup for my periods and although I was unsure at first I’m happy to report I’m now a convert. I always combine with sanitary wear as for me this is more comfortable.
